Obituary

Alvin Booth McCarty, 85, of Sunflower, Mississippi, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2019. After months of failing health, Alvin "Shotgun" McCarty died peacefully at his home surrounded by family.

Alvin was born September 7, 1933 to Alvin Erwin McCarty and Inez Booth McCarty. In 1953, he married the love of his life, Katherine "Kaki" Cartwright McCarty. Alvin "Shotgun" McCarty was a strong patriarch of his family and a good friend to all. He was a good father and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. A man who never cared much about himself and who even in his final days would say to his loved ones, "just take care of Kaki when I'm gone." Shotgun was a strong, proud, and good man. He is loved and will be missed by many. Shotgun was a lifelong resident of Sunflower, where he served on the Board of Alderman. While his health allowed, he was always working for the betterment of the town. He was a faithful member of Sunflower United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees, former Chairman of the Board, member of the finance committee, and was the church delegate to the Mississippi Annual Conference. The church is still there today as a result of his dedication and efforts. He was a charter member of the Delta Grace Board. Shotgun served on the Board of Directors of Farm Bureau and served as the Chairman of the National Aquaculture Community. He also served on the Board of Directors of South Sunflower County Hospital for 41 consecutive years, serving 14 years as Chairman of the Board.

Shotgun was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Inez McCarty; sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Joe Seymour; and his daughter, Kathy McCarty.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Katherine "Kaki" Cartwright McCarty of Sunflower; one son, Chuck McCarty and his wife Marcia of Oxford; one daughter, Cindy Miller and her husband Lynn of Sunflower. He also leaves behind twelve grandchildren, Chip Sligh, Ginger Berry (Phillip), Josh Sligh, Elissa (Jackson) Oliver, Lucas McCarty, Josh Bodie, Jessica Bodie, Drew McCarty (Elizabeth), Jordan Stephens, Elizabeth Skelton (Taylor), Jonathan Miller and Chelsea Miller; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Monday, April 22, 2019 from 1:00 pm until the 2:00 pm funeral service at Sunflower United Methodist Church. Rev. Veronica Pritchard will officiate the service.
