Bonnie Thomas Smith of Indianola, Mississippi passed away on January 18th, 2021. She was born May 21st, 1936 in Indianola where her parents, Al Thomas and Johnnie Bell Thomas resided. Bonnie graduated High School in 1954 and was active in cheerleading for the Indianola Indians. She married JL Smith July 3, 1954 and they resided in Indianola until their deaths.

Bonnie worked with the Sunflower School system in the Administrative office doing the teacher payroll. After retiring, J.L. and Bonnie Smith traveled the world and were fortunate to make 4 trips to Canada, one trip to Alaska, and two trips to Mexico. They also toured several countries in Europe including Switzerland, England, France, Italy and Germany where they were able to view the German production of "The Passion Play".

The couple raised three children: Daphne Smith Cobb of Gulfport Mississippi, Carol Smith Rose (Sammy) of Indianola, and Jerry Smith of Jackson. They have 7 grandchildren: Michael Powell (Stephanie) of Biloxi, Erin Bailey of Gulfport, Cassey Rose Hardin (Mark) of Indianola, Samuel Rose (Lydia) of Indianola, Layne Smith of Austin, Texas, Matthew Smith of Jackson and Luke Smith of Jackson. They have 7 great grandchildren: Aleighson and Bella Bailey of Long Beach, Rose, Mills and Maryn Hardin of Indianola and Avery Addison Powell and the soon to be Channing Crosby Powell of Biloxi. She also has a sister, Susan (Billy) Hutchinson of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina and was preceded in death by another sister, Jessie Ann Vincent (Tony), and a brother, Al Thomas, Jr. (Bonnie) of DeKalb MS. There are many nieces and nephews in the family and all share a special love for her.

Bonnie was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church in Indianola where she looked forward to every service. She was a member of the Chapel Sunday School class and took great pride in her love for the Lord. She enjoyed family and friends and was able to keep up with the day to day happenings of all of them through Facebook, despite the Corona Virus shutdown.

The world has lost a great lady and heaven has found an Angel. We miss you Bon Bon!

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, January 24, 2021, at Indianola City Cemetery with Dr. Guy Burke officiating. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
