Obituary

Carol Mohamed Ivy, 79, of Belzoni, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at her home.

Carol was born December 19, 1942, in Belzoni. She was the youngest of eight children born to Hassan Mohamed and Ethel Wright Mohamed. Her brother, Ollie, always said "she was made of scraps and there wasn't enough Syrian blood for her" because she was "the blonde" of the family. Carol was raised with an impeccable work ethic and never took a day off. She worked many years as a realtor and a merchant, owning clothing stores in Florida. Carol loved Belzoni; she was always working for the betterment of her community. Her devotion to her community led to her serving as City Alderman for 12 years and serving as Mayor of Belzoni for 3 years prior to resigning due to health. Carol enjoyed jewelry, clothes, and fashion. Above all, she loved her family and was a very devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Hassan and Ethel Wright Mohamed; her first husband and childhood sweetheart, Garnett Covert Harris; second husband, James Ivy; brothers, Ollie Mohamed, Bubba Mohamed, and Buddy Mohamed; sisters, Sunny Dismukes, Joy Fulcher, and June Allen; and nephews, Ollie Mohamed, Jr. and Jimmy Fletcher.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Elizabeth Harris Campbell (Rick) of Madison and Amy Joy Harris Hawkins (Jerry) of Indianola; sister, Hazel Mohamed Wilson of Alamo, California; two sisters in law, Anita Mohamed of Inverness and Deborah Westbrook of Belzoni; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 10, 2022, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Belzoni. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. George Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Belzoni Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
