Charles Elmo Lowery, 85, of Saltillo, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at Memphis VA Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

Charles Elmo was born August 11, 1936, in Ruleville where he spent his childhood. In 1954, he started his military career.  In 1958, he married Frances Cobb and later raised their four children in states and countries all around the world. Charles served three tours in Germany, two in Korea, and one in Vietnam. When he retired, he had earned the National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; Vietnam Campaign Medal; 2 O/S Bars; Parachutist Badge; Army of Occupation Medal (Berlin); Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and the Army Commendation Medal. He moved back to Indianola in 1979 when he retired from the Army. In 1980, he was a Data Processor for Lewis Grocer Company and worked there until his retirement in 1994. Charles and Frances moved to Saltillo in 2006 and called it home. Charles was very involved with VFW Club as a lifetime member, Disabled American Veterans lifetime member, Vietnam Veterans of America lifetime member, and the American Legion. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Etoyl Lowery; brother, Verbie Lowery; son, Ricky Lowery; and daughter in law, Cindy Lowery.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Frances Cobb Lowery of Saltillo; son, Mike Lowery (Scottie); two daughters, Kathy Winstead (Grady) and Tammy Chapman (Michael) all of Saltillo; one brother, Ernie Lowery; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Becky, Lee, Charlie, Sarah, Bubba, and Miranda; and eight great grandchildren, Wade, Noah, Cameron, Alaina, Haylee, Kyleigh, Maddie, and Braxton.

Visitation will be held Saturday, July 2, 2022, from 11:00 am until noon at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. The funeral service will begin at noon at Burton Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Cobb, Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Indianola City Cemetery with Rev. Bob Hill officiating. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
