Charles Hamilton “Toby” McClatchy, Jr., 90, of Indianola, passed away Monday, September 14, 2026, at Select Specialty Hospital in Jackson.

Charles was born at home on December 3, 1935, in Linn, to Charles Hamilton and Verla Young McClatchy. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1954, and then Mississippi State University. While working for Commercial Credit Corporation in Memphis, he met and married Jean Wilson, the love of his life. Later, the couple lived and worked in Jackson, where their daughter Elizabeth was born.

He joined the ROTC at Mississippi State and served in the Mississippi Army National Guard. Charles farmed for many years, and after retiring, he worked as the Cemetery Director for the Indianola City Cemetery, retiring after many years of service. He was a lifelong member of First Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Swartz Ward Rose Sunday School class.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 61 years, Jean Wilson McClatchy; daughter, Elizabeth Sparks; and two sisters, Beth Switzer and Carolyn Garrard.

He is survived by his sister, Nancy Woods (Jim) of Indianola; a special sister-in-law, Jane Frey of Southaven; nieces Mary Lynn McPherson and Lori Thomas (Wes), nephews Flip Godfrey (Dawn) and Chip McElmurray (Dodie), and several close cousins. He also leaves behind many friends and coffee buddies, and his dog Pistol.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2026, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at First Methodist Church in Indianola. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm with Rev. Michael Lindsay officiating. Burial will be held on Friday, September 18, 2026, at 1:00 pm at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 N. Germantown Rd., Bartlett, TN 38133. Pastor Mark Goble will conduct the graveside service. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
