Charles Fred Melton, III, 76, of Moorhead, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at his home.

A chuckle, a warm smile, and a heart full of love – these were the trademarks of the man affectionately known by many names. Pops, Freddy, Molock, Mo, Mo Man, Charlie, Charlie Fred, Charlie Wine, and Tater Head Fred were just a few of the endearing monikers that captured the essence of a man whose presence lit up every room he entered. Yet, above all, he wore the title of Paw Paw with the utmost pride. It was a name that resonated with the joy he found in family, a name that echoed the laughter of grandchildren who held a special place in his heart. While the variety of nicknames may have caused some playful confusion, each one reflected a different facet of Charles's personality, creating a tapestry of affectionate titles that highlighted the depth of his character.

Born October 11, 1947, in Yazoo City, MS, Charles was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. To know him was to experience the love, patience, and kindness that mirrored the teachings of Christ himself. A devout member of the Indianola Church of Christ, Charles lived a life guided by faith and servitude.

His heart, a vessel of boundless compassion, never knew a stranger. Charles had an exceptional talent for making every person he encountered feel valued and appreciated. His genuine love for people extended beyond the confines of his church, as he embraced every opportunity to cater to large gatherings, ensuring that he personally knew each individual present. His passion for cooking great food became a vessel through which he expressed his love and shared joy with the world.

With a career spanning over 35 years in the Agriculture Industry, Charles dedicated himself to service, making significant contributions to the field. A pioneer in seed treatment chemistry, his innovative work positively impacted the entire agriculture industry, leaving an indelible mark that continues to shape it today.

Beyond his professional achievements, Charles found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether cooking, hunting, fishing, or cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers as an active member of the Talladega Turn 4 Club, he embraced every moment with enthusiasm and zest.

Family was at the center of his universe. His love for his family, especially his grandchildren, was immeasurable. Whether attending events, ball games, or awards ceremonies, he was a constant and reassuring presence, cheering on his loved ones with unmatched pride and joy.

In the tapestry of life, Charles was the biblical definition of a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Friend. His memory will forever be cherished, and his legacy will continue to inspire those who were touched by his presence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Fred Melton, Jr. and Minnie Lurline McCorkle Melton and his wife, Linda Kay Rumley Melton.

Charles is survived by his son, Charles Allen Melton (Stacy) of Senatobia; two daughters, Christi Winston (Terrence) of Indianola and Jennifer Alford of Madison; brother, David Melton (Geraldine) of Greenville; seven grandchildren, Rieleigh Bowen, Andy Bowen, Tyler Alford, Kaylee Alford, Lily Melton, Claire Melton, and Luke Melton; great grandson, Lawson Bowen; and niece, JeriAnne Hunt (Lee) of Greenville.

A celebration of Charles's life will take place at the J.T. Hall Coliseum at Mississippi Delta Community College at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 4, 2024. Burial will follow in Leland Stoneville Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm. The family requests that donations be made to MDCC Alumni Scholarship in Charles's honor. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
