David Glenn Smith, Sr., 63, of Indianola, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at South Sunflower County Hospital.
David was born May 17, 1959, in Indianola, to John Breland Smith and Mary Katherine Sims Smith. He attended school in Indianola. David married Karen Mitchell on June 27, 1986, and together they raised their family in Indianola. He worked as a diesel mechanic for Lewis Grocer/SuperValu for 33 years prior to his retirement. David then worked for K.L. Breeden as a diesel mechanic until his illness progressed. He was a former member of the Indianola Kiwanis Club where he served as president. David was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved children and would claim his children's friends that would come to visit as his own. David was Santa Claus' helper for the last 40 years. He loved his dogs, racing, the Chicago Bears, and karaoke. David even worked as a DJ for WDLJ 96.9 for several years. He loved the movie Life, and that was where he heard his favorite phrase, "I da Pappy". David was a very caring person that would give you the shirt off his back. He loved the Lord. David was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church and was active in the Emmaus Community when his health allowed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Breland and Mary Katherine Smith and his two dear friends, Kenny Sears and Jimmy Pate.
David is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karen Mitchell Smith of Indianola; four children, David Glenn Smith, Jr. (Amy) of Corinth, Brandy Smith West (Glenn), Heather Smith Allen (T.J.), and Jon-Hunter Smith, all of Indianola; one brother, Gary Smith (Margaret) of Trenton, Utah; his beloved dog, MoMo; seven grandchildren, Jacob Smith, David Smith, III, Emily West, Katey West, Gabby Allen, Jackson West, and Ela Allen; and dear friends, Billy & Ann Pate, John Johnson, and Buster Moore.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 30, 2022, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, July 1, 2022, at Eastwood Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Pender and Rev. Matthew Morgan officiating. Burton Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
