Obituary

Donald Mac Steed, 79, passed away Monday, November 4, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Services will be held at Eastwood Baptist Church on Friday, November 8 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. Internment will be at Lehrton Cemetery in Ruleville.

Mac Steed was born in Ethel, Mississippi, one of three children to the late Virgil Steed and Hilda Cummins Steed. The son of a Mississippi Department of Corrections Officer, he grew up at Parchman and graduated from Drew High School in 1963. He was also a graduate of Diesel Mechanics College in Nashville, Tennessee.

He later resided in Minter City and has been a long-time resident of Indianola. In 2014 he retired from a 45-year career in the dry-cleaning business. He and his wife, Lynda, owned and operated Steed's Cleaners in Indianola and Ruleville and previously, Park Avenue Cleaners in Greenwood.

Mac was a licensed pilot and an avid outdoorsman. He treasured his family and friends, and all knew him as a man who never did any job halfway and was never one to neglect reading the instructions. He was fond of a funny story, and loved Ford trucks, gospel and country music, nabs, and a cold diet coke. He had a knack for fixing almost anything and was often found gardening and working his land near Doddsville, dubbed The Ponderosa.

He was a faithful and active member of Eastwood Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a member of numerous committees. His family and friends will miss his humor and wisdom but take comfort knowing he is now telling his life stories in heaven.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lynda Walker Steed, daughter Lynn (Steve) Steed Alderman of Madison (MS), Scarlet (Boyd) Steed Gregory, of Catawba (NC), three grandchildren (Anna Piper, Will Alderman, and Gray Alderman), and two great grandchildren (Parker and Amelia Alderman); and brother, Toby Steed. He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Tux.

Rev. Jimmy Pender and Rev. Ron Burch will officiate the services, and pallbearers will be Will Alderman, Steve Alderman, Boyd Gregory, John Harrell, Stephen Harrell, and Joel Kyle. Honorary Pallbearers are Jack Kyle, Roger Anthony, Sam Cotton, Dwayne Williamson, Cousie Giglio, John Miller, Andy White, Gray Alderman, Donnie Upton, Jack Toler, Allen "Doc" Snowden, Davis Lee Whatley, Donnie Baker, Michael Williams, Michael McKay, and Jeff McKnight.

Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Eastwood Baptist Church, 549 Dorsett Drive, Indianola, MS 38751.
