Doris Buchanan Perkins, Indianola, Mississippi, died on July 23, 2016. She was born on August 31, 1918, and was the daughter of Frank Vassar and Willie Moss Buchanan.
She married Ben Marshall Perkins of Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. They were married 48 years before his death in 1996. Her mother and father, and her brothers, Frank Moore Buchanan, James Curtis Buchanan, William Buchanan and Joe Buchanan predeceased her. She leaves two sister-in-laws, Sara Jane Buchanan of Indianola and Charlotte Buchanan of Leland and a host of nephews, great nephews, nieces and great nieces.
Doris was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Indianola but later joined the Episcopalian Church with her beloved husband, Ben Perkins. The couple had no children but devoted their lives to their families and friends. The couple loved their dachshund pets. Doris' last pet, Heidi, was her constant companion and protector.
Ben and Doris enjoyed entertaining and often hosted friends from Marianna and England, Arkansas where Ben had served as president of local banks. Doris loved her home and gardening. She especially liked planting gladiola bulbs so she could have fresh flower arrangements in her home.
The family would like to thank her special caregiver, Gloria Smith and the wonderful staff at Indywood as well as her caring physician, Dr. Wade Dowell. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola Is in charge of arrangements A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 25 at 1:30 pm at the Indianola City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Indianola.
