Obituary

Evelyn Cox Winters of Indianola, MS, age 93, died peacefully at Walter B. Crook Nursing Facility in Ruleville, MS, on January 20, 2024. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend to many.

Daughter of Bennie Watson Cox and Wilna Daves Cox of Blackhawk, MS, she attended Blackhawk School until she met the love of her life, Arthur Borden Winters. They were married August 4, 1946, and were married over 56 years.

Evelyn loved her church, her family, children, flowers, walking, biking, cooking, and visiting with her friends. She was affectionately called Mamaw by her family and so many others in the community.  She was a people person who never met a stranger. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church of Indianola for more than 60 years serving on several committees.

She is proceeded in death by her husband Arthur Borden Winters, her parents Bennie Watson Cox and Wilna Daves Cox, infant son Ricky Stanley Winters, siblings Ben Alvin Cox, McCoy Cox, Bobby Cox and Billy Cox.

Evelyn is survived by 5 children:  Diana Winters Gordon (Owen) of Skene, MS, Warren Dale Winters (Teresa) of Pensacola, FL, Arthur Steven Winters (Debbie) of Denham Springs, LA, Michael Cox Winters of Athens, TN, and Melissa Winters Tupman (Bryan) of Marshall, MN.  She is also survived by her sister Sarah Eunice Pittman and her brother Ronald Cox (Linda) along with many nieces and nephews.  Evelyn was a proud grandmother to 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola, MS, Tuesday, January 30, 2024, from 1:00pm – 2:30pm followed by the service at 2:30pm.  Interment will immediately follow at Indianola City Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.

The Winters family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Walter B. Crook Nursing Facility for their compassionate care during her time there.
