James Wylie
Griffin
Jul 20, 1947 — Sep 9, 2019
Moorhead
Mr. James "Squeaky" Griffin, 72, of Moorhead, passed away Sunday, September 9, 2019 at Mississippi Baptist Hospital in Jackson. He was born on July 20, 1947 in Moorhead, Mississippi to the late Mr. and Mrs. Willard Griffin. Griffin graduated from Moorhead High School in 1966 and attended MDJC from 1967-69 and Delta State University from 1970-71.
Jimmy managed Griffin Oil Company from 1972-1980 and worked as Moorhead's City Manager from 1981-1995. From 1995 to present, he was employed at Indianola Pecan House where he served as an inshell pecan buyer traveling to many states. He later became the wholesale gourmet pecan salesman.
He had an intense love for the town of Moorhead, which led him to be involved in many of the community activities. He served as head of the cemetery committee, was a member of the Go-Head-Mo Head Reunion Committee, and was very instrumental in the success of the Annual Johnny Russell Fundraiser, which was held in Moorhead for many years. He also had a passion for the Mississippi Delta Community College and their athletic program where he played a large role in serving in every capacity. His love for the college ran deep, which was proven as he was given the Distinguished Service Award by MDCC in 1989 and 2005. Griffin was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at MDCC in April 2018. He was the epitome of a "True Trojan".
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Moorhead Methodist Church with Rev. Veronica Pritchard officiating. Interment will follow in the Moorhead Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday at Moorhead United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his sister, Genie Kay Rose and her husband, Robert Lynn of Duck Hill, Mississippi and his two brothers, W. G. Griffin and his wife, Cissy of Water Valley and John Robert Griffin of Moorhead; his beloved eight nieces and nephews that he loved so much; and seventeen great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Gordon "Griffin" and Frances Jones Griffin; and his sister-in-law, Skeetie Griffin.
