James Edward 'Jimmy' Slater, 68, of Indianola, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Jimmy was born in Indianola on January 3, 1958, to Luther Edward Slater, Jr. and Dorothy Watson Slater. He graduated from Indianola Academy and earned his bachelor’s degree from Delta State University. He married Kay Jones Slater in 1983, and together they made their home in Indianola. Jimmy worked with his dad at Slater’s Jigs and, with a strong mind for business, they opened an outdoor retail store with archery ranges and more. He was an outdoor enthusiast and loved hunting and fishing. He also loved sports. Jimmy coached baseball in all age groups, from Little League and Pony League to high school. He was a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. Jimmy loved his family above all.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eddie Slater.

Jimmy is survived by his mother, Dorothy Watson Slater of Indianola; his wife of 43 years, Kay Jones Slater of Indianola; two sons, James Andrew ‘Drew’ Slater (Amy) of Greenwood and Edward Allen Slater (Kelcey) of Indianola; sister, Valina Slater of Indianola; three grandchildren, JonHartley Slater, Nate Slater, and John Allen Slater; five nieces; and his longtime friend and coworker, Clemetta Williams.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. A second visitation will be held Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am funeral service at Burton Funeral Home. The burial will follow at Indianola City Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with the arrangements.
