James "Jimmy" Edwin Weems Sr. died on January 28, 2020 at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland due to natural causes. He was 85.
Mr. Weems was born on October 11, 1934 in Bobo, MS to his parents, James Ernest and Lois Carter Weems. He was a 1952 graduate of Inverness High School and continued his education at Mississippi State University where he enrolled in the ROTC program and received his degree in 1956. In 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Alyce Rose Landwirth. After graduation, Mr. Weems served in the Army entering as a Second Lieutenant and resigning his commission as a Captain nine years later. Mr. Weems and his family then returned to the Mississippi Delta and he spend subsequent years farming in Belzoni, MS before returning to Inverness, MS and continuing to work in the farming industry as well as the propane and fuel industry.
After retirement, Mr. Weems served two terms as the mayor of Inverness, MS before focusing his time to his lifelong passion of gardening. When he wasn't gardening, he loved to travel, read and most of all watch the Atlanta Braves play baseball.
Mr. Weems is survived by his wife, Alyce Landwirth Weems; his son and daughter-in-law, William Frederick and LaNelle Weems; his son, James "Jim" Edwin Weems Jr.; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jay Sykes; and four grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Weems Hitt; and his sister, Margaret Ann Weems Sheffield.
Visitation is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Inverness United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Southside Cemetery in Inverness. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
