Jean Denson Evans, 95, of Isola, passed away Friday, December 27, 2019, at her home.

The daughter of William Quin and Mary Warwick Denson, she was born in Tuscola, MS on November 26, 1924.  She graduated from Carthage High School and from East Central Junior College in Decatur, MS.  In 1945, she moved to Isola to teach school.  It was then that she met a handsome, young man who had just returned from service in Europe.  On seeing him, she declared that she was going to marry him.  On September 1, 1946, she did and became Mrs. Arthur Barrett Evans.  Two children were born to this union, Claudia and Barry.

She joined the First Baptist Church in Isola when she moved there saying that she believed that one should always join a church where you lived.  At her death, she had been an active member for about 75 years.  While there, she served as a Sunday School teacher for girls, song leader, and was a member of the choir.  She was known for her lovely high soprano voice and was a popular wedding singer.  It was a tradition for her to sing "O Holy Night" at Christmas.  Jean worked for many years in the credit department of the Sears Catalog Sales office in Belzoni.  Later she helped her husband turn their cropland into a successful catfish farming operation.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband A.B., son Barry, her parents, sisters Pauline Wood and infant Ruth, and her brother Quin Denson, Jr.  Survivors include her daughter Claudia Heflin of Isola, six grandchildren:  Amy Pearson of Jackson, Rob Heflin of Isola, Leslie Higginbotham of Starkville, Lindsey (Kevin) Turner of Leander, Texas, Ryan Heflin of Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Ashley (Robert) Shurley of Lexington, MS; nine great-grandchildren:  Keeton (Gillon), Hayden, Barrett, and Max Higginbotham, Hayley Pearson, Grace and Anna Turner, Lilly Trippe, and Graham Heflin.

Services will be at First Baptist Church, Isola on Monday, December 30, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until service time. Burial will follow in Belzoni Cemetery in Belzoni.  Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
