John Carl Skelton, Jr., 89, of Indianola, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, in Indianola, due to injuries sustained in an auto accident.
John Carl was born August 14, 1933, in Indianola, to John Carl Skelton and Nettie Faye Parkerson Skelton. He was a graduate of Indianola High School, where he was voted Best All Around, Most Athletic, and Mr. Indianola High School. John Carl attended Sunflower County Junior College and Delta State University. He was a United States Army Veteran. John Carl married Carol Ann Crook, and together they made their home in Indianola. He went to work for City Auto Supply as the manager and eventually bought the business. He ran it for many years prior to his retirement. John Carl also served as the Sunflower County Veteran Service Officer for several years. He always looked back fondly on playing sports. He was quick to grab the Indian Trails yearbook to show his friends his high school accomplishments. John Carl remained a lover of all sports, especially football. He loved entertaining in his home with cookouts or fish fry's. John Carl always had a story to tell, although the story was often embellished, he loved telling them. He loved his coffee drinking buddies and enjoyed the time spent with them, mostly "lying and storytelling". John Carl was a Master Mason and was Past Master of Indianola Lodge No. 450 in 1975 and again in 1995. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Indianola.
John Carl was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lisa Skelton Marshall; twin granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth Marshall and Emily Katherine Marshall; and brother, Gene Skelton.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Ann Skelton of Indianola, two sons, John Carl Skelton, III of Indianola and Ryan Austin Skelton of New York, NY; brother, Robert Skelton (Claudette) of Greenville; and one grandson, Joshua Peyton Marshall.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 28, 2023, from 10:00 until 11:00 am, at First Baptist Church in Indianola. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 am with Dr. Guy Burke officiating. Burial will follow in Indianola City Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
