Lois Welch Mitchell, 80, of Indianola, passed away Monday, July 24, 2023, at South Sunflower County Hospital.
Lois was born October 4, 1942, in Inverness, to Doyce Oakland Welch and Annie Mae Ferguson Welch. She lived in Inverness for 17 years until she married James Howard Mitchell. Together they lived all over the world during his time serving in the military. Lois and James and their family moved back to the delta in October of 1979 to help care for their parents. She raised her children and her grandchildren. Lois was a member of First Baptist Church in Inverness and attended Eastwood Baptist Church in Indianola for over 40 years. There, she taught Sunday school, vacation bible school, and bible drill. Lois was a true servant of Christ. She enjoyed arts and crafts, woodworking, and painting. Lois taught home school to teach painting and cake decorating.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Doyce and Annie Mae Welch; four brothers, John, Bobby, Gerald, and Darvin; three sisters, Frances, Laverne, and Sybil; and son-in-law, David Smith, Sr.
Lois is survived by her husband of 63 years, James Mitchell of Indianola; two sons, James Mitchell, II (Rhonda) of Corinth and David Mitchell (Angie) of Carthage; daughter, Karen Smith of Indianola; two brothers, Jimmy Welch of Leland and Michael Welch of Arkansas; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth Mitchell, Jon-Hunter Smith, Mitch Mitchell, David Smith, Jr., Brandy West, Heather Allen, Luke Pierce, Emily Keen, and Nate Keen; 7 great grandchildren; very special friend and sister-in-law, Vickie Welch; and her beloved dog, Chloe.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 26, 2023, from 8:30 am until 9:30 am at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. Graveside services will follow at 10:00 am at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Inverness with Rev. Greg Hood and Rev. Jimmy Pender officiating. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
