Mary Sumerall, 93, wife of the late Col. Randolph Miller Sumerall, died August 27 at her home in the Mt Carmel Community, Hot Springs Village.
Mrs Sumerall was born in the small German village of Gross-Tychow, daughter of the late Paul and Berta Maass. She was predeceased by five brothers, Viktor, Fritz, Rudy, Siegfried and Harry Maass; two sisters, Ilse Nehls and Vera Ohst; and two sons, Randolph M Sumerall, Jr. and Paul Maass Sumerall.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Mia Terrell (Johnnie) of Hot Springs Village and Diane Green (Hal) of Denton, TX; a sister, Doris Endlicher of Vienna, Austria; sisters-in-law Ursula Maass of Greenville, MS, Gisela Maass of Berlin, Germany and Gisela Maass of Scharnebeck, Germany; daughter-in-law, Nancy Sumerall of Dunwoody, GA; grandchildren, Lucas Johnson of Seattle, WA, Neel Ryan Tucker of Denton, TX, Maria-Randolph Baseel (Nick) of South Windsor, CT, Harrison Sumerall (Kathi) of Tampa, FL, Alexander Sumerall of Dunwoody, GA and William Sumerall of Richmond, VA; four great grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Mrs Sumerall met her future husband in Berlin in 1945 toward the end of the war and later came to America to marry him in 1948. She and Randolph spent many years in the Mississippi Delta where he farmed and was postmaster in Isola. She was devoted to her family and loved her Delta relations and her many friends. She often said the happiest time of her life was raising her family on the hill in Caile.
The family will receive friends Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Inverness. A private family burial will follow at Wright-Miller Family Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
