Nadine Cummins Hughes, after a brief illness, passed away in Kingwood, Texas on August 19, 2021. She was blessed to have her family by her side as she took her last breath while listening to her favorite hymn "We Are Standing on Holy Ground".

Nadine was born on June 18, 1936, in Ethel, MS (Attala County). She was welcomed into this world by her parents James Selmer and Ruby Lee Cummins along with her six siblings: Ellis, Coolidge, Jewel, Helen, Hilda and Mildred.

From the time she was born and graduated from high school, Nadine lived on a small farm in the red clay hills of Mississippi. She attended Ethel High School and was a member of the girls' basketball team. Nadine played forward and was proud of her team's many winning seasons. One of her favorite sayings was "you know the score in basketball changes really quickly."

Once Nadine graduated from high school she moved to Indianola, MS and started her career as a telephone operator. But that career was short lived because she went on a blind date and met the love of her life on Valentine's Day. She was swept off her feet by the handsome hunk in his leather bomber jacket with broad shoulders, winning smile, and kind heart.

Nadine married Robert Walter Hughes, Sr. (Bobby) on April 30, 1955. They settled into their married lifestyle, bought a house and 10 months later their first child, Cynthia, was born. They then moved to Clarksdale where Bobby could pursue a job opportunity and shortly thereafter, their second child, Walter, was born.

The Clarksdale move was short lived, and their little family returned to their home on 500 Mimosa Street.

She and Bobby immediately joined Indianola First Baptist Church where they served 60 plus years. Nadine was a member of WMU. She was a faithful member of the choir and the Ladies Ensemble Singing Group. She also rang hand bells. She enjoyed the ladies Sunday School class helping with vacation Bible School and many other activities over the years. She looked forward to seeing her friends at a weekly meeting on Wednesdays called "the Lunch Brunch." Nadine cherished her friends and in her later years did her best to meet the same group of ladies everyday at McDonalds at their special table to drink endless cups of coffee with their senior discount where they solved many of the world's problems.

As for friends, one of the highlights of Nadine and Bobby's summers was traveling to Arkansas and trout fishing on the White River with their dear friends Dorsey and Carolyn Ray. After returning from their many adventures, tales have been shared and re-told over the years to the delight of their family and friends.

Nadine lived in Indianola for 66 years before she moved to Kingwood, Texas on August 9, 2021. Being a wife, mother, and running the household was her top priority and greatest joy.

Nadine was the last member of both her husband and her siblings and their spouses. She is survived by her daughter Cynthia McElmurray and husband Mike of Kingwood, Texas; her son, Walter and wife Marilyn of Memphis, Tennessee; grandchildren, Ben McElmurray (Kristin), Leigh McElmurray, Rob Hughes (Allison) and Julia Stonebrook (Cole); and 9 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Friday, August 27, 2021, at Burton Funeral Home in Indianola. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, August 28, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Indianola. Burial will follow in Indianola City Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home in Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
