Sam Hugh Matthews, Sr., 76, of Indianola, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, at Delta Health the Medical Center in Greenville.

Sam was born June 19, 1945, in Arkansas City, Arkansas, to Leonard Arrie Matthews and Elvie Inez Birdsong Matthews. He worked as a mechanic until his retirement. Sam was a devoted and loving family man. He was a hard worker and was always a jokester.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice Allen Matthews; daughter, Stephanie Matthews; and two brothers, Oscar Matthews, and James Matthews.

He is survived by his daughter, Dana Matthews of Indianola; son, Sam Matthews, Jr. (Wendy) of Vidor, Texas; four sisters, Lucy May of Mantee, Frances Redwine of Leland, Patricia Redwine of Mantee, and Linda Milan of Leland; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, October 1, 2021, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Burton Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 pm with Rev. Pete Roncali officiating. Burial will follow in Crowder Cemetery in Crowder. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements.
