Samuel Stephen Herring, 70, of Belzoni, passed away Monday, May 10, 2021, at Sharkey Issaquena Nursing Home in Rolling Fork.
Sammy was born March 5, 1951, in Isola, to L.B. and Birdie Ophelia Abel Herring. He worked for Belzoni Tractor Company for over 25 years prior to his retirement, then he went to work for Wade, Incorporated in Indianola and worked in the parts department for over 10 years prior to retiring for the second time. Sammy was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting for arrowheads. He loved playing with the men's softball league, and played basketball, tennis, and golf. Sammy was a gifted writer and loved writing poems about life. He enjoyed Sudoku, crossword, and the jumble in the newspaper every morning. Sammy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Belzoni, where he served as a deacon and led the congregational singing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, L.B. and Birdie Herring.
Sammy is survived by his wife of almost 49 years, Debbie Martin Herring of Belzoni; two children, Samuel Stephen Herring, Jr. of Belzoni and Samantha Herring Gonzalez (Alfredo Jr.) of Brandon; one brother, Terry Herring (Sylvia) of Vidor, Texas; and five grandchildren, Abbie Grace Herring, Samuel Stephen Herring, III, Kyleigh Alayah Gonzalez, Kameron Alyssa Gonzalez, and Kendall Annalise Gonzalez.
The family will receive friends Friday, May 14, 2021, from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm at First Baptist Church in Belzoni. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 pm with Rev. George Johnson and Dr. Billy McKay officiating, Burial will follow in Belzoni Cemetery. Burton Funeral Home of Indianola has been entrusted with arrangements. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the Burton Funeral Home Facebook page for those unable to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Belzoni, Sharkey Issaquena Nursing Home or any charity of the donor's choice.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Sharkey Issaquena Nursing Home and Adoration Hospice for their compassionate care.
