Bill received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Bill enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Perrin Air Force Base in Texas. He later served in the United States Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in Salzburg, Austria.

Bill moved to Dallas, Texas prior to settling in Jackson, Mississippi. He married the love of his life, Liz, on February 15, 1964. He worked for Metalbestos, Inc. for 25 years before retiring and starting William G. Stevens Insurance as an independent insurance agency for the rest of his career.

Bill was a faithful member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson for 47 years. While there, he served on numerous committees, was an elder and a deacon, and was instrumental in starting and leading the 12-Step Sunday School class in 1990, and was active in the Explorers Bible Study until they moved to Indianola. After moving to Indianola, Bill was active in his community and was a member of the Rotary Club, Explorers Bible Study, and a patron of the Mid Delta Arts Association. Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church, Indianola.

Bill was an avid painter, as well as, an Orchid enthusiast. He was president of the Mississippi Orchid Society and traveled to orchid shows around the southeast.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Liz. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Missy Stevens Pitts and her husband Will; grandchildren, Lizzy Pitts, Mitchell Pitts, and Molly Pitts all of Indianola; sister-in-law, Joanna Mayfield of Carthage; nieces, Mary Elisa Mayfield Boyd, Debbie Mayfield Bush; nephew, James Michael Mayfield and wife Alisha Whatley Mayfield; great niece Mabry Mayfield; and great nephew, Reed Mayfield.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 21, 2016 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Newman Hall. Graveside services will follow at Wiggins Cemetery in Carthage, all under the direction of Burton Funeral Home, Indianola.
